Fear … Erkki Tuomioja, Finland’s foreign minister

EUROPE is secretly preparing for the break-up of the single currency, a top Finnish politician let slip yesterday.

Greece exit now ‘likely’ says Finland.

Erkki Tuomioja, Finland’s foreign minister, admitted that holding the euro together now looked “impossible”.

His dire warning came as a make or break week for bankrupt Greece began.

Expectations were growing last night that the country would be the first to be booted out of the euro.

Mr Tuomioja said: “This is something that everyone is looking into. But it is not something that can or should be discussed openly.

“We certainly do not hope this will happen.

“But without further support or changes to its programme it looks likely.”

The revelation came as one German member of the European Central Bank’s board also hinted at a so-called “Grexit”. Joerg Asmussen for the first time described it as “manageable”.

New Greek Premier Antonis Samaras is flying to Berlin and Paris this week to beg for two years’ more grace to repay the EU’s bailout money.

But yesterday a report revealed that despite two months of work to tackle the country’s deficit since knife-edge elections in June, Greece’s debts have just got LARGER.

Dr Michael Fuchs, a close ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said: “We are not accepting this any more. I don’t think there’s any chance they’re going to make it.”

Greece only just managed yesterday to repay its latest tranche of sovereign debt bonds.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has already warned: “We cannot throw money into a bottomless pit.”
